Fall has finally arrived and there is no better time to come out and visit Raven Rock State Park. Located just a few miles West of Lillington, Raven Rock is a hidden gem waiting to be discovered! With several options for hiking trails to choose from you will always be able to see something new. Of course if your interest also leans towards peaceful settings you can find that too. Bring a portable chair (or not as we have benches placed along the way) and hang out by the river at several locations and just enjoy the sounds of nature.
For those that enjoy equestrian activities there are two trails on the North side of the river which can be accessed off of HWY 401 by turning left on Christian Light Rd about 3.3 miles past the 401/421 junction (Food Lion and McDonald’s shopping center.) Then go approximately 3.4 miles and turn left on River Road. After that you have another 1.4 miles and the parking area will be on your left. (1590 River Rd, Fuquay-Varina, NC 27526)
Or, if you harbor a more proactive interest in the Park you could come out and join the Friends of Raven Rock (FRARO). We are a 501(c)3 non-profit organization chartered under the North Carolina Friends of State Parks. Our mission is to support the park and find ways to help the Staff make Raven Rock a better place! We do this by collecting donations to purchase equipment, supplies, and materials that can be used to make park improvements. We also volunteer our time and help the staff keep the park clean. If any of this sounds interesting to you please consider joining our group. Membership is $10 a year per person and all dues collected are kept for use at Raven Rock. All membership dues collected at the Fall meeting count for Nov/Dec 2019 and for the 2020 calendar year.
Of course if you have a desire to be more involved you might be interested in joining the Board of Directors. Our job is to directly support the vision of the NC State Park System as implemented by the Park Superintendent. We do this through creating and planning local events at the Park for the enjoyment of everyone. We meet 6-7 times a year for a few hours to discuss current events and ideas for future projects. Currently we have ten Directors on the Board and several are ending their terms this year. So please consider coming out and showing your support for FRARO and allow us to continue supporting RARO for many more years!
